Healthy Aging Hubs

On June 7, 2024 the Pittsburgh Foundation awarded BCM a 2 year grant of $200,000 to support programming for older adults.

BIPOC communities have been dealing with generational and historical trauma which has had an impact on their mental health. The disparities that arose, pushed appropriate and proper care out of the reach of many. By establishing 6 Healthy Aging Hubs, we hope to offer the safe spaces where people can be educated, find healing and support others to age with dignity and in better health.

Based on the surveys conducted at each site, an array of activities will be offered. The activities will include but not be limited to:

Volunteer Opportunities

Giving the seniors in each site opportunities to volunteer across BCM programs and activities, giving them a sense of belonging. The residents and participants at the Bethany Center will receive regular information about upcoming volunteer opportunities provided as newsletters from BCM.

Cognitive Exercises

Engaging in activities that challenge the mind can help seniors maintain cognitive function and prevent cognitive decline. This can include puzzles, crosswords, Sudoku, reading, learning a new language, or taking up a new hobby or skill. BCM has an active group of volunteers who crochet and knit. This group may meet at one of the sites, pending interest. These activities would take place monthly and be led by BCM staff or volunteers.

Relaxation Techniques

Teaching seniors relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. These practices can also improve sleep quality and overall emotional well-being. These activities would take place monthly and be led by BCM staff or volunteers.

Creative Expression

Encouraging seniors to engage in creative activities such as painting, drawing, writing, music, or crafting can provide an outlet for self-expression and emotional processing. A BCM staff member will provide a creative arts session 4 times a year for each site.

Reminiscence Therapy

Reminiscence Therapy includes reflecting on past experiences through activities such as storytelling or scrap-booking. These activities would take place twice a year and be led by BCM staff or volunteers.

Bible Study

For seniors who find comfort in spirituality or religion, a Bible study will be offered weekly through Bethany Baptist Church. For those who would like to attend the weekly Bible Study at the church, transportation will be provided.

Counseling & Support Groups

BCM will offer access to counseling services or support groups specifically tailored to seniors through Bethany Baptist Church’s Certified Biblical Counseling Program. Organizations like The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will also be invited as speakers as part of our Lunch & Learn series, which will take place once a month.

Meal Delivery

The current meal delivery sites are Homewood Station, Marian Plaza, and The Lemington. There are seniors who come to receive meals at The Bethany Center who will be invited to participate in the Healthy Aging Hub.
